Brown Ideye has revealed the reason he was omitted from the 2014 Super Eagles World cup squad by late Stephen Keshi and admitted he was really disappointed by the decision. The 31 year old who plays for Greek side Aris Saloniki said this in an instagram live chat with Germany based journalist Oma Akatugba.
Ideye was one of the surprise omissions from the squad named by Stephen Keshi, despite his impressive performances at the 2013 African cup of Nations and FIFA Confederation cup in South Africa and Brazil respectively.
Bobby as he is fondly called formed a blockbuster partnership with Emmanuel Emenike to win the 2013 AFCON title and scored 10 goals in 37 games for Dyanmo Kiev in the 2013/2014 season, whilst pushing for a move to the English Premier league.
“It was sad and heartbreaking at the time I wasn’t called up to represent Nigeria at the World Cup. I was part of the triumphant squad that won the AFCON in 2013. I was also in great form for my then Ukraine side Dynamo Kyiv. So I was very confident I was going to Brazil in 2014. But when the list came out, my name wasn’t there.
Daniel Amokachi who was the assistant to Stephen Keshi then said 60% of what transpired. It was very shady and controversial. Many things didn’t add up, especially after seeing my replacements in the squad. But I’m going to reveal more in my book after I retire.
He added that he was initially hurt after missing the biggest showpiece, but he was delighted to complete his record move to West Bromwich Albion.
“Dropping me for the 2014 WC later seemed like a blessing in disguise. I feel like God used the disappointment to get me the WBA deal. I was a bit down, but as soon I signed the deal with West Brom, I was kind of relieved and forgot everything about the world cup and was more focused on getting myself ready for the season,” he concluded.
He later returned to National team football and last featured in the 2016 World Cup qualifiers, against Zambia in Ndola.
Ideye isn’t the first player to speak about missing the 2014 World Cup. Chinedu Obasi also did and alleged he had to pay a bribe to be part of the squad and he declined.
