Odion Ighalo has revealed he is in regular contact with Lille’s Victor Osimhen and has tipped the Nigerian to become one of the best strikers in the world. The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United after a fantastic season with the Ligue 1 side in which he has scored 18 goals in 38 appearances.
And Ighalo, who is currently on loan with the Red Devils from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua, has further fueled speculation of Osimhen moving to Old Trafford in the next transfer window by telling of his close relationship with his compatriot.
In an interview with Elegbete TV, he said:
I talk to Osimhen, he’s a very nice boy, young, he’s a good guy.
We talk, not almost every day, but almost every time I advise him. He’s the future of Nigerian football. He’s the future, he’s going to do so well in football.
I always advise him to keep calm, keep working hard and the guy is going to be a celebrity, you know.
Ighalo, who has scored four goals in eight appearances for United, has also revealed that Osimhen was in attendance for their Europa League round of 32 clash with Club Brugge in February, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
He came to watch our game against Club Brugge in Belgium because it’s closer to where he lives, he messaged me he was going to come so I gave him my jersey, and in fact he brought his own jersey for me, too”, Ighalo added.
Osimhen is a nice boy, we’re from the same place. I love him, he’s down to earth, he’s hard working, he has a future and he has the mentality of a winner, that’s what I love about him. He has that lion’s heart.
I love him, I just want him to keep working hard the way he’s doing, he’s going to break so many records in Europe and Nigeria.”
Should Osimhen join United, he would provide competition to Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Ighalo, should the latter be signed up to a permanent deal.
Reports over the past few weeks had suggested that Ighalo has been offered a bumper deal to remain at the club beyond the end of the current campaign, however he has revealed that no offer has yet been made.
Meanwhile, a pundit has cast doubt over Jadon Sancho’s potential move to United after claiming clubs won’t be able to afford big money transfers due to the coronavirus outbreak.
