Best Goalkeepers In Europe Right Now | 2019/2020 Season

Clinton McDubus

Goalkeepers are one of the most important figures on a football field. Undervalued for their contributions and over-criticised for their errors, there’s no position under quite as much scrutiny as the goalkeeper.

For those of you who haven’t seen the earlier parts of this series, please do, we also explain the criteria a little in the opening paragraphs.

Their unique position makes those who excel there all the more impressive. With that in mind, here are Europe’s top 10 goalkeepers currently (overall quality is considered but weighting is given to this season’s displays).

This ranking is based on

  1. Eye test
  2. Save percentage + xGA performance
  3. Conceding from outside the box.

10. Unai Simon (Athletic Club)
Athletic Club’s excellent defensive record owes a lot to Unai Simon’s heroics. SO far, he has a save percentage of 75% and a PSxG of +6.7.

9. Yann Sommer (Gladbach)
Sommer has been one of the busiest goalkeepers in Germany all season. In spite of that, he has been able to hold his own, with a save percentage of 73.7 and a PSxG of +6.1.

8. Thomas Strakosha (Lazio)
Strakosha has the joint highest number of clean sheets in Italy and has conceded the least amount of goals per game with a save percentage of 79%. He also has a PSxG of +7.2.

7. Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace)
Vicente has kept 9 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, the third highest tally, with a 75% save percentage and a PSxG of +8.1.

6. Gautier Larsonneur (Stade Brestois)
Gautier has been on fire for Brest all season, making save after save after save. He has been one of the busiest goalkeepers in Ligue 1 and has often come to his team’s rescue.

In the top 5 for most saves in a game this season, he appears twice, for his 9 saves vs Lille (including a penalty) and his 8 saves vs Marseille. He has a 75.8% save percentage and PSxG of +8.1.

5. Dean Henderson (Sheffield United)
Boasting the joint-second highest clean sheets in the Premier League (10), Henderson has been on fire this season for Sheffield United, combining a save percentage of 75.8% and a PSxG of +6.5.

4. Aitor Fernández (Levante)
Aitor has been La Liga’s busiest goalkeeper in La Liga this season, facing 43 more shots on target (159 SoT) than any other goalkeeper while boasting a crazy PSxG of +12.4 and a save percentage of 76.7%.

Despite the lack of protection from his defence, he has been able to stand out as their clear best player and one of the best in Europe this season.

3. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid)
Real Madrid have the best defensive record in Europe’s Top 5 leagues (19 goals conceded) and Thibaut Courtois has been in great form. He has the most clean sheets in La Liga (12) in 24 games so far and a PSxG of +1.4.

2. Alisson Becker (Liverpool)
Liverpool are another team with an excellent defensive record (21 conceded), and the only club that has conceded less than them in Europe’s top 5 leagues is Real Madrid (19).

Alisson has played in only 20 of their 29 games so far, conceding 11 goals with a save percentage of 80% and a PSxG of +4.6. He has 11 clean sheets from 25 total games in PL and CL games.

1. Predrag Rajković (Reims)
Reims have the best defensive record in France (21 conceded) and the only club that has conceded less than them in Europe’s top 5 leagues is Real Madrid (19). Of their 21 conceded in 28 games, Rajković has been in goal for 27 of those games, conceding just 18 goals.

He has faced 5 penalties in the league this season, saving 4 of them. He has a save percentage of 79.8% (2.6 saves per game) and has so far outperformed his xGA by more than 5.0. Add to that, he has a PSxG (percentage save above expectation) of +8.4. In 30 total games this season in all competitions, he has kept 14 clean sheets including a remarkable clean sheet in Reims’ 2-0 win in Paris against PSG..
